“Hello, it’s me.”
With a simple statement, Adele is back and better than ever.
In a statement released via Twitter on Oct. 20, the Rolling In the Deep singer announced her new album,25, and said that her new body of work is not a “break-up record, it is a make- up record.
On Oct. 21, she flooded social media with her album artwork and cover art, and on Friday, Oct, 23 Adele released her first single in nearly four years: Hello.
The song was co-written and produced by her and Greg Kurstin, and was made in Columbia Records studios in Los Angeles. True to form, Adele’s voice soars in a ballad about love and loss; only this time it is a little more adult, and a whole lot better.
Hello begins its verses in a slow but honest manner with lyrics such as “I’ve been in California dreaming about the way we used to be,” and “They say time’s supposed to heal ya, but I ain’t don’t much healing.” The verse then elegantly bows to a massive chorus laid with emotion that has not been heard on mainstream radio since songs such as Someone Like You. With lines like “Hello, from the other side/I must have called a thousand times,” it is a surefire heartbreaker. It then swirls through a bridge of vocal acrobatics that cut like butter, and booms into a final triumphant chorus ringing with bells and background vocals that can leave your emotionals in a wreck.
Hello is not about an ex-lover, or a romantic relationship. It is about Adele’s ability to reconcile with her past that she so desperately wants to make up for. A feeling that is written within us all. Her voice, her lyrics, and her melody resonate, which is exactly why this song will mark her greatest success yet.
It had immediate impact. Within hours of release, Hello was No. 1 on Itunes in 118 countries, and the accompanying music video broke the Vevo record for most views in 24 hours. In one day, Hello sold over 400,000 copies in the United States alone, making it the fastest selling song in digital history.
Adele’s highly anticipated album 25 is expected for release on November 20th and is available for pre-order on ITunes now along with the purchase of Hello. Hello serves as the first single off her third studio album, an album that has been awaited since her last album, 21, swept the digital music scene in 2011.
Adele is said to have been working on the project with industry heavyweights such as Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, and even Phil Collins. The new album is expected to embody her decision to jump into a more mature adult life at the age of 25, after the birth of her son Angelo, now aged 3.
